Abstract
Abstract In order to investigate the effect of nitrogen fertilizer (0, 40 and 80 Kg from urea) and phosphorous fertilizer (0, 30 and 60 Kg from super phosphate treepal) on yield and essential oil production of chamomile (Matricaria recutita L.) an experiment was conducted based on randomized complete block design with three replications in 2007. The results showed that nitrogen and phosphorous fertilizer significantly increased (p≤0.01) number of flower and flower dry weight. Plants treated with 40 kg nitrogen produced 742.2 flowers per plant with 20.63g flower dry weight while control plants (0 kg nitrogen) had the least number of flowers (507) and 10 g flower dry weight per plant. Phosphorous fertilizer also increased dry weight and number of flowers per plant. Plants treated with 60 kg phosphorous fertilizer produced the highest flower number and dry weight per plant. However, N and P fertilizers had no significant effect on essential oil (Chamazolene).
