Abstract
Haghighi S, Moaddab H, Afshari E, Moshaverinia A, Shahbazi Y., Ileal hypertrophy, strongyle cecal lesions and dysmotility in a horse. Online J Vet Res., 16 (3):154-158, 2012. A 13-yearold mare with a history of colic presented with shock, recumbency, pale mucosal membranes and cold extremities. Pulse rate was 130 beat/min without abdominal intestinal sounds. The animal died and necropsy revealed hypertrophy of the walls of the ileum and thickening of the cranial mesenteric artery. A large thrombus with red worms was found attached to the intima of the cranial mesenteric artery. Microscopy revealed Strongylus vulgaris larvae with hypertrophy of muscularis mucosae of the cranial mesenteric artery. It is suggested that a mechanism for Ileal hypertrophy could be stasis due to strongyle infestation.
