The essential oil from the natural gum of Pistacia atlantica var. mutica grown in Iran was obtained by hydro-distillation method and its chemical composition was analyzed by GC and GC-MS. In addition, the antimicrobial activities of the oil against the growth of two grampositive (Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus) and two gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) were evaluated using the agar-disk diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) methods. The GC-MS results showed that α - Pinene, Myrcene, Limonene, ρ-Cymene, 1,8-Cineole and E-Caryophyllene were the major components of essential oil of the mastic gum. The antimicrobial results showed that the essential oil was active against B. cereus, S. aureus and E. coli.
