Abstract

Spirocecosis is caused by Spirocerca lupi. This nematode is primarily a parasite of dogs, which typically causes oesophageal nodules, aortic aneurysms, and spondylitis. Vomiting and/or regurgitation, lethargy and depression, pyrexia and anorexia are the most common clinical signs in affected dogs. An Iranian native dog with history of dysphagia and regurgitation was referred to Department of Pathobiology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Shiraz. The dog was euthanized due to the owner\\\'s request. At necropsy, multiple and different size nodules were seen in esophagus. At cut section of these nodules, numerous, spirally coiled, reddish, 3-8 cm long worms were found in central cystic space. Histopathological examnination of esophageal nodules revealed longitudinal and transverse sections of the nematode in central cystic space surrounded by epithelioid cells, an intense accumulation of inflammatory cells, most of which were eosinophiles and connective tissue. Regards to macroscopic and microscopic findings, dysphagia and regurgitation in this case are result of Spirocercosis.
