Authors: Rajabali Askarzadeh Torghabeh , مرضیه ربیعی فر ,Abstract
A successful communication occurs when it is both syntactically and pragmatically accurate. On this account, the present study tried to explore the effect of culture on language by focusing on the effect of Iranian and American culture on production of speech act of command. To this end, different situations were introduced to sixty participants from these two cultures, by means of a Discourse Completion Task (DCT), to elicit the production of commands in each culture. The produced speech samples were analyzed based on a rating scale by Blum-Kulka and Olshtain (1984) to find out similarities and differences in commands in each language. Results revealed that cultural differences between these two communities are influential on the way people make commands.
