Abstract

Introduction: Myiasis is defined as infestation living tissues of man and animals with dipteran fly larvae. It is common in domestic and wild mammals of all over the world. Myiasis can occur in different parts of body such as natural orifices, cutaneous, eye and ear of mammals. Wound myiasis is dominant type of myiasis in animals. Oral myiasis is a “rare” and “unique” type of myiasis because the oral cavity is not a good habitat for larval stages of myiasis-producing flies. Larval stages of Wohlfahrtia magnifica are obligate parasites of warm-blooded vertebrates in southeastern Europe, southern and Asiatic Russia, the Near East and North Africa. The aim of present article is introduction a gingival myiasis in a camel caused by W. magnifica in Iran. Material and Method: In may 2012 during the inspection of slaughtered camels for ectoparasites we encountered with a gingival myiasis in a 15 years old camel. Black gum was evident and after inspection some larvae were seen in dental cavities. The larvae were detached and were transferred to 70% ethanol. In parasitology laboratory anterior and posterior spiracles and cephalopharyngial skeleton of larvae were studied. Identification of larvae was done according to zumpt (1965). Result: Entomological studies showed these larvae are belonging to obligate myiasis-producing fly wohlfahrtia magnifica(Sarcophagidae). Discussion: There is not any report of wohlfrhtiosis in camel from Iran. Infestation of wounds by larvae of W. magnifica in camel has been reported from Israel(Schnur et al;2009). Furthermore there is a case report of gingival myiasis in a lamb caused by W. magnifica in turkey(Aydenizöz; 2008). To our knowledge the present report is the first report of gingival myiasis in camel caused by W. magnifica in the world.
