Material and Methods 287 faecal samples were obtained from animals and humans (Table 1). Samples were characterized as symptomatic or asymptomatic. Five isolates were selected for biochemical testing and molecular characterization by sequence analysis of 16S rDNA (1431 bp) and partial nox sequences (733 bp). Results and Discussion Seventeen of the 287 samples were positive for growth of Brachyspira spp. All isolates recovered were weakly hemolytic. An epidemiologic relationship to diarrhoea in laying hens was indicated since nine of the 60 symptomatic, but only one of the 60 asymptomatic samples taken were positive for Brachyspira growth. Sequence analysis of 16S rDNA and partial nox g gene sequences revealed that four of five selected isolates were B. pilosicoli.
