Abstract

Many studies (Jahangard, 2008; Sabet and Youhanaee, 2008) seek to analyze the structure of writing articles in English journals. However, not many have analyzed the effect on writing style of differences of culture. This preliminary research aims to find out whether there are differences in writing articles among writers from three cultures (Persians, Malaysians and English) and across three disciplines, namely Humanities, Science and Social Science. Using Hyland’s taxonomy, five components (transitions, frame markers, evidential markers, endophoric markers, and code glosses) were used to analyze twenty seven articles sent to journals from different disciplines. The findings show that culture does in fact play a role in the kind of markers writers use more frequently in article writing. Persian writers favoured frame markers (39%), Malaysian writers selected endophoric markers (50%), while English authors preferred to use evidential markers (43%). Discipline was also taken into consideration and the results reveal that in humanities, evidential markers (57%), in Science, endophoric markers (61%), and finally in Social sciences, frame markers (35%) were the most frequent.
