Supramolecular architectures of coordination compounds have recently attracted increasing ‎interest due to the structural variability of metallic complexes and their potential applications as ‎functional materials in different area of chemistry such as asymmetry catalysis and sensor ‎devices [1-2]. Since, supramolecular architectures have been successfully designed and ‎synthesized through self-assembly of molecular building blocks via non-covalent intermolecular ‎interactions, the development of this area agrees with a growing interest in understanding the ‎nature of these interactions as a key factor to control and modulation of product topology [3].‎ Various types of interaction have been utilized for the assembly of molecular components in ‎which conventional hydrogen bonds have played a central role as primary crystal structure ‎formers in the solid state. In this regard, the importance of weaker interactions including π-‎stacking and C–H...π interactions has also widely accepted among supramolecular chemists [4]. ‎In this paper, we report the synthesis and structural characterization of mercury (II) halide ‎complexes [HgCl2(L)2] and [Hg2Br4(L)2] containing N-(2-pyrazine)-furan-carboxamide ligand ‎‎(L). The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy and X-ray ‎crystal structure analysis. In our design, the presence of furan and pyrazine as hetero aromatic ‎rings could provide recognition sites for π-based interactions to form supramolecular structure. ‎On the other hand the hydrogen bonding synthons formed by the -NH-C(=O)- amide segment ‎revealed the important role of these directional interactions in the crystal structure.‎
