Abstract
One of the first steps toward domestication of wild endemic plants is to prepare the most suitable condition which could lead to enhancement in germination. In Iranian traditional medicine the species of Eryngium sp. genus have several medicinal properties including diuretic, laxative and appetizer. Eryngium caeruleum M. B. is a perennial herbaceous plant that has been distributed in the northern parts of Iran. Because of the young leaves' good taste and aroma, they are used in food preparation. The fresh seeds of Eryngium caeruleum M. B. usually have a deep dormancy and takes months to germinate. So it would be worthy to investigate its seed's Germination. Therefore in order to find out an effective method for this fact, a factorial experiment based on completely randomized design with three replicates was conducted to investigate the effects different priming treatments including KNO3 (1 and 2%), Salicylic acid (0.5, 1, and 2 mm) and control (distilled water), in Ferdowsi University of Mashhad in 2013. The greatest amount of germination percent was observed by application of KNO3 (78%) while the minimum amount was detected in control (57%). In comparison with control, SA in 0.5 mm increased germination percentage considerably (72%). Results revealed that both Kno3 treatments reduced 34% germination time. To conclude, priming Eryngium caeruleum's seed with KNO3 is recommended in order to achieve the higher germination percentage in shorter time.
