Abstract

Hypericum perforatum L. (St. John´s Wort) is a medicinal plant widely utilized for the treatment of depression. The anti-depression activity is mainly attributed to the phenolic compounds hypericin and hyperforins[1]. The objective of this study was to establish an in vitro tissue culture for H. perforatum. Distal part of the 25-30 day seedling was used as an explant on Murashig and Skoog minimal organics medium supplemented with benzyl amino purin (BA: 1.5, 1, 0.5, 0.45, 0.35, 0.25, 0.1 mg.l-1). Shoot regeneration occurred on all supplemented BA tested and was significantly highest in medium suplemented with0.1 mg.l-1 (14.5 shoots/ explant). Shoots which were developed on the medium containing 1.5, 1 and 0.5 mg.l-1BA were abnormal. Based on this experiment is was found that Iranian H. perforatum, Azadshar population are sensitive to BA concentration higher than 0.1 mg.l-1, but if the aim is the production of biomass, a lot of biomass can be produced.
