During the past decades, gold nanostructures have attracted extensive interests because of their unique optical, electronic, photonics, magnetic, biological, catalytic properties and other performances different from their bulk counterparts [1-2]. Typically, gold nanoparticles are obtained by chemical reduction of tetrachloroauric acid using toxic reagent such as sodium borohydride [3]. It has been noted that the variation of particle growth medium plays a profound role in controlling the size and colloidal stability. Meso-methyl-meso-phenyl-2,2’-dipyrromethane (1) is introduced for the first time in the preparation of gold nanoparticles in large quantities by the reduction of HAuCl4 in medium without using any capping agent or surfactant. Meso-methyl-meso-phenyl-2,2’-dipyrromethane is synthesized via a condensation reaction between acetophenone and pyrrole under green aqueous conditions. These prepared gold nanoparticles are characterized by several analysis techniques. It is proposed that in situ formed oxidative products of dipyrromethanecould serve effectively as a capping agent during the reduction process, directing the formation of gold nanoparticles.
