Abstract

Passeriformes containing more than 60 percent of bird species are the most diverse ones. They are worldwide and found on all continents except Antarctica. In this study, using two mitochondrial genes, i.e. COI (Cytochrome Oxidase subunit 1) and ND2 (NADH Dehydrogenase subunit 2), the ability of two genes for identification of passerin birds of Khorasan province was compared. In total, 1285bp and 1927bp sequences for COI and ND2 genes were studied, respectively. The sequences were provided from Molecular lab of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad and also the complementry sequences were downloaded from GenBank data set. Our data showed that the average interspecific and intraspecific K2P distances for COI and ND2 genes were 0.156, 0.018 and 0.247, 0.012. In total, the average interspecific K2P distances were 9 and 21 that folds the intraspecies of COI and ND2 genes, respectively. Therefore, the findings showed that the performance of ND2 was better than COI for the identification of passerins in Khorasan Province.
