Abstract

During educational innovation, textbooks play a crucial role as agents for change because they provide a picture of what the change is going to look like (Hutchinson and Torres, 1994). Considering the crucial role of textbooks in ELT program, this study aimed to investigate: a) to what extent Prospect 1 had the characteristics of a CLT curriculum, b) What the strengths and weaknesses of this newly published book were c) How the instructors teaching the book evaluated its practicality; and d) How this textbook could be improved. To this end, the textbook was evaluated with reference to Cunningsworth’s (1995) checklist. The findings revealed that the curriculum had been able to integrate the four language skills, increase student-student and student- teacher interaction, promote pair and group work. However, the dialogues and the contexts lacked authenticity, recordings were artificial, new words were not reviewed in next lessons; there was no phonetic transcription for new words. To gain further insight into the teacher’s perception of the book, the instructors were also interviewed. They believed although the book was a great progress comparing to its predecessors, it had some shortcomings which the article delves into. Results of the study indicated that the new book served for its purpose and up to some extent met the instructional objectives of the approach, but still had some important deficiencies if willing to meet the expectations of a CLT approach.
