Abstract
Four ruminallycannulatedHolsteinsteers(540±35 kginitialbodyweight)wereusedina 4×4 Latinsquaredesignover21-dayperiodstoexamineeffectsofsupplementingabasal diet (CON)withthymeoil(THY,500mg/kgDM)orcinnamonoil(CIN,500mg/kgDM)on nutrient digestibility, ruminalfermentationcharacteristicsandrumenmicrobialpopulations. Monensin(MON,33mg/kgDM)wasusedaspositivecontrol.Steerswerefedabasal diet astotalmixedration(TMR) ad libitum. Theresultsindicatedthatdrymatterintake (DMI) andapparentdigestibilityofnutrientswerenotaffectedbyadditives.Dietarysupple- mentations didnotaffectruminalpHandammonianitrogenconcentration.Totalvolatile fatty acid(VFA)concentrationsandproportionsofacetateandbutyratewerenotaffected by essentialoils(EO),buttherewasatrend(P<0.10)forareducedconcentrationoftotal VFA andproportionofbutyratewithMONsupplementationcomparedtoCON.Propionate proportion increased(P<0.05)withTHYandMONsupplementationandtheratioofacetate to propionatedecreased(P<0.05)withEOandMON.Therelativeabundancesofproto- zoa andmethanogensdecreased(P<0.01)intherumenofsteerswhensupplementedwith additives. Ruminalpopulationof Ruminococcus flavefaciens was notaffectedbytreatments, but populationsof Fibrobacter succinogenes and Ruminococcus albus decreased (P<0.05)by supplementation ofEOorMON,respectively.ResultsfromthisstudysuggestthatTHY or CINcanbeconsideredaspotentialalternativestoMONandmightbeusefulasrumen fermentation modifiersinbeefproductionsystems.
