Introduction: Motivation is a process in which a goal-oriented activity is motivated and maintained. Motivation is a process. It is not a product. Objectives: This study attempts to investigate the effectiveness of group new reality therapy based on choice theory in motivation for change of substance abusers. Materials and Method: In order to achieve the aims of this study, a pretest, post-test with control group design was applied. In terms of lower case level of motivation and inclusion and exclusion criteria, 40 individuals were selected from Therapeutic community (TC) center of Mashhad city. They were randomly divided into the experimental and control groups. Both groups completed The Stages of Change Readiness and Treatment Eagerness Scale (SOCRATES 8) before and after treatment. Results: The Findings showed that group new reality therapy based on choice theory leads to enhancement of motivation for change in substance abusers in the experimental group compared with the control group. Conclusion: reality therapy can be used to enhance motivation for change of substance abusers.
