Title : ( The Concept of Meta-theatre in Albee’s The Sandbox and The Zoo Story )
Authors: Rajabali Askarzadeh Torghabeh , Nasrin Nezamdoost ,Abstract
Theatre, through linguistic and realistic eyes, is a mirror to present the real life. But there are moments in people's lives that they play roles; their real selves are not presented. In other words, they are playing theatre; even, they are aware of their role playing or such theatricality. Thus, to show the artificiality and illusionary sense of life, a type of theatre emerged which goes beyond the framework and conventions of realism. This special kind of theatre was called methatheatre. The writers of this article have chosen The Sandbox and The Zoo Story, two one-act plays written by Edward Albee. For their study, the authors have used Lionel Abel’s (2003) ideas to analyze these two plays. Abel asserts that meta-theater marks the linguistic and functional frames and also those boundaries that conventional dramatic realism would hide. The findings of the study show that the characters in these works, play within the play and play roles and imaginative fiction to rebel against the prescribed societal norms to establish a possible social change. Thus the characters do not accept their societal role and each character tries to create his/her own role to change his/her destiny.
