Abstract

Adirectcouplingofcarboxylicacids-treatedmulti-walledcarbonnanotubes(MWNT)surfacewithaminesisintroducedtofunctionalizeMWNTwithasparticacids(Asp).Amideformationhasbeencarriedoutinthepresenceofsimplezirconiumcatalystsat5mol%loadingandthensurfacefunctionalitygroupsandmor-phologyofAsp-treatedMWNTwerestudiedbyinfraredspectroscopy,thermogravimetricanalysis,Ramanspectroscopy,andtransmissionelectronmicroscopy.ToimposemagneticpropertytothesurfaceofMWNT,FeionscovalentlyattachedthroughthecarboxylicacidsgroupofAsp.ThispromisingmethodofusingacombinationoffunctionalironandAspbasedonMWNTwasintroducedforincreasingstabilityandthermo-physicalpropertiesofMWNT-basedwaternanofluids.MWNTwasstablydispersedinaqueousmediaandinthesecondphaseofstudy,theferromagneticMWNT-basedwaternanofluidswerepreparedatdifferentcon-centrationstoestimatethethermo-physicalandrheologicalproperties.Density,viscosity,electricalandther-malconductivitybehaviorofMWNT-basedwaternanofluidsinthepresenceofferromagnetic,(Fe),covalent(Asp)andnon-covalent(GumArabic)functionalgroupswereinvestigatedandpromisingresultsobtained.Itwasfoundthattherheologicalandthermo-physicalpropertiesofferromagneticsamplesweresignificantlyenhancedcomparedtothecovalentnanofluidsandcertainlypurewater.
