چکیده

Cannula is a vital instrument for carrying huge amount of blood out of the body. For example, in hemodialysis, blood oxygenators, and ventricular assist devices, the cannulas act as a bridge between the cardiovascular system and a foreign mechanical device. Despite lots of developments in left ventricular assist devices, unwanted factors like bleeding, infection, neurological dysfunction, hemolysis and thrombosis are leading to deaths in some patients. The local blood flow parameters like stagnant, slow or recirculating flow and low wall shear stresses in ventricle and cannula increase the thrombosis risk. Therefore, the exact analysis of the blood flow behavior in the ventricle and cannula is essential to check the risk of thrombosis in cannulas. In the present study, computational fluid dynamics is used to investigate the risk of thrombosis in an ideal model of clinically cannula Medtronic DLP 12F (applicable for kid's blood circulation diseases) with four holes on the tip. Moreover, for 0.25-1 L/min flow rates, some parameters which may have effect on the risk of thrombosis have been studied.
