Abstract Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller is known as one of the greatest tragedy of the 20 century. During the time, it was praised for its strong criticism on American Dream illusion and capitalist society and its dehumanizing power upon individuals. Family relationships have a central role in this play by Miller. Using Conversation Analysis in the level of Politeness and Impoliteness theories, this paper explores conflicting relations between Willy and his family as manifested in the linguistic features. Through an objective analysis of Politeness and Impoliteness theories, this paper aims at revealing the effects of contextual relations of characters on their conversational behavior. Results indicate that the way interlocutors use language strategies to redress face threatening acts are directly related to each character’s social status and economic power.
