Abstract
The need for membrane development is a challenge in forward osmosis process. In this study, cellulose acetate membranes were prepared by using a mixture of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and acetone with different ratios as solvent. SEM photographs showed that by increasing the NMP concentration in solvent mixture from 25 to 50 wt.%, significant structural change from sponge-like to finger-like occurred. Investigation of membrane performance in forward osmosis process showed that by increasing the acetone percentage in the NMP/acetone mixture from 0 to 50% due to decreased membrane porosity, the water flux and reverse solute flux decreased from 6.79 to 4.97 l/(m2 h) and 75.67 to 48.47 g/(m2 h), respectively. So by increasing acetone in NMP/acetone mixture due to lower solute reverse flux, membrane performance improved.
