Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine effectiveness of couple therapy based on Gottman’s method of decreasing emotional divorce among conflicted couples in Mashhad City. The design of study was semi-experimental with pre-test and post-test, and control group. The sample for the study comprised 14 voluntary couples of all those couples who had gone to psychological clinic of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad and Dr. Kimiaei’s clinic. They were assigned randomly to an experimental and control group (7 in each). The experimental group revised 8 session for one and half hour couple therapy based on Gottman’s method. Participants were assessed by EDS questionnairs. ANCOVA models were used to test the study hypotheses. Result of the study showed that participants in the experimental group could reduce emotional divorce. Therefore, couple therapy based on Gottman’s method may help couples suffering from emotional divorce.
