Pigments from marine yeasts are functional biomolecules having potential applications in food and pharmaceutical industries, especially in the treatment of diseases .Therefore, in this study five pigmented yeasts were isolated from the shrimps and organic solvents were used for extraction of the pigments from the yeasts. Evaluation of the biological functions of the pigments including antimicrobial effects was carried out on strains Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Listeria innocua ATCC 33090 by microbroth dilution technique. Also anticancer effect of the pigment designated as CCV1 was evaluated on the cell lines DU145 and HDF by MTT method. The results of antimicrobial experiments showed that intracellular pigment CCV1 in concentration of 20 mg/ml 100 % inhibited the growth of bacteria, whereas CCV2, CCV5, CCV7 and CCV9 pigments respectively inhibited 68%, 87%, 55% and 71% of the growth of L. innocua bacterium. CCV7 pigment also inhibited 50% of the growth of S.aureus. MTT results showed that the pigment CCV1 had no effect on the cancer cell line DU145 in all concentrations tested (800, 400, 200, 100, 50, 25 µg/ml) at 24,48 and 72 hours. In normal HDF cell line, CCV1 pigment caused a 2-3 fold increase in the cell numbers in concentrations of 200, 400 and 800 µg/ml while had no effect in lower concentrations (25, 50, 100 µg/ml). In conclusion we have found that from screening of pigmented yeast inhibiting various environments, novel biological effects could be emerged as CVV1 pigment had high antibacterial activity and in beside promote human cell growth
