Abstract
Necrotic Enteritis due to Clostridium perfringens (CP) strains harboring netB gene is a well-known disorder in poultry. The aim of this study was to investigate association of a novel bacteriocin, perfrin with netB among isolates from healthy and diseased ostriches and broiler chickens. Forty six CP isolates from broiler chickens and ostriches collected from 2010 to 2014 were included in this study and used in PCR. Fifteen (32%) isolates were positive for both netB and perfrin. A significant association between the presence of perfrin and netB positive isolates and outbreaks of necrotic enteritis in broiler farms were found (p=0.009). Among 16 isolates from diseased ostriches, 9 (56%) were positive for both netB and perfrin but none was positive from healthy ones (p<0.001). This is the first report of perfrin associated netB positive CP strains in ostriches.
