Abstract

Abstract This article has studied Look Back in Anger. The play belongs to the theatre of revolt and being a precursor of the absurd movement. The study approached this play through an existential approach, tracing the Camusian notions of absurdity, rebel, revolt and suicide and the elements of existential revolt such as subjectivity and alienation. The study of the above mentioned elements in the play, proved the play to belong to the theatre of revolt in the subsection of existential revolt, showing the rebellion against the conditions of humanity and creation. The aim of this study is to examine the elements of rebel and revolt, violence and menace in this seminal work. This article also analyses the characters of the play, especially the character of Jimmy porter who is angry with everybody in the play with a view towards the life of the modern man and his existential struggle. The study of absurdity and the characteristics of the rebel helped understanding the character of Jimmy Porter and clarified his psychological mindset and motives in his loud violent outbursts and threatening and wounding attacks on others and their actions. The violence and menace in the play is mostly shown through verbal and emotional outbursts and sarcasm and threats. The rebel character who is ignored and alienated by others who do not show interest in his rebellion and understand him becomes more and more excessive in his behavior. Others also resort to violence and hurtful language since they cannot tolerate the extremity of Jimmy’s behavior and his constant demand for awareness and rebellion. The results of the study show that the play portrays modern rebel who revolts against the absurd human condition and laments the condition of humanity in the post-war Britain. The play picturing the hopeless condition of the youth and the utter alienation of a sensitive and rebellious character who has become due to this very conditions completely alone and in metaphoric exile from those around him who wish to take the easier way and return to the blind hope of religion and in attempt crucify their intellect for peace of mind.
