Abstract

The focal aim of the present study is to offer a thorough study of one of the best Arab novels Season of Migration to the North (1969) regarding the germ of violence in the lives of main of its different characters especially Mustafa Saeed who was previously less considered by the critics. To follow this aim the present study takes the advantages of post-colonial theory thinkers including Edward Said in general and Homi Bhabha in particular. Said’s introduced concepts such as Orientalism contribute the study to find a general knowledge to the novel and those of Bhabha’s including hybridity, mimicry/mockery and the relation between colonization with psychological consequences shed light on the main focus of the study; the identity crisis and succeeded violence and assault gendered in characters of the novel. Results indicate that the stereotypical pictures the Britain made out of the Arabs are not based on reality but are just constructed and deceptive. Furthermore, to react against such binary between the West and the Others, the individuals like Mustafa resist and their inner hatred lead them to revenge. Their resistance is manifested in their hybrid identity when through mimicry of the Europeans behavior and culture they try to be trustable in the foreign land. So looking from post-colonial discourse Mustafa is not just a victimizer but a victim himself who is controlled and pushed to his crimes by the hegemonic ideologies and imposed forces of imperialism of colonization discourse. He suffers from the cultural disintegration and reacted to that by abusing European women who are the symbol of the mother land. The results also show that this social and cultural disintegrations not only affect the colonized but the colonizers themselves who all are driven to the homicide and suicide; they take self-destruction as the only remedy for identity destruction.
