Abstract

Background: Bacteria live on Earth billions of years ago and the first alive creature on the earth was a bacterium. Bacteria are single-celled microscopic organisms that have the ability to perform different works. They are able to do harmful things such as pathogenicity that makes us sick and useful things such as bacterial flora that exists on or in the body and help us to stay healthy. But the important point is that harmful or useful bacteria, need communicate with one another, to act as a unit. This chemical communication called quorum sensing (QS). Methods: A thorough search of international electronic databases was carried out to detect relevant papers of QS, including empirical, descriptive, and discursive papers that were published over the last half century. Results: At first it was thought that only eukaryotes and multicellular organisms capable of coordinating cells to perform a specific function, but in the early 1970, the first studies to examine the communication between bacterial cells began and in 1994, it was detected and termed quorum sensing. After that and from 1996 onwards, the majority of studies focused on monitoring this process and in recent years researchers are looking for ways for inhibition of QS in pathogenic bacteria. Conclusion: inhibition of QS with the goal of production next generation of antibiotics is a novel method that may open a new way for controlling bacterial infections in multidrug-resistant bacteria. We can also trying to reinforce or more effective of QS in beneficial bacteria, such as bacterial flora and industrial bacteria.
