Abstract
The aim of this study is to find the best fillet and notch shape so that it possesses lower stress concentration factor. Evolutionary structural optimization (ESO) and additive evolutionary structural optimization (AESO) techniques are employed for optimization of two and three-dimensional fillets and notches. A number of key points are defined on the boundary and spline curve are utilized for modeling. The results show that the ESO method can be utilized for shape optimization problems where there exist geometric constraints and is able to find better solutions. More specifically, the AESO algorithm is used to optimize a 90° fillet and support bracket. The results agree well with those using Local Curvature Method. In some cases the proposed method can gain up to 23% improvement with respect to the other previous studies.
