Title : ( Effect of Red Beet Root Aqueous Extract on Induced Allodynia in Male Rats )

Introduction: Neuropathic pain is a chronic pain could be caused by damage to the nervous system. Many people around the world have this type of pain. Conventional analgesics usually do not effective or show less effect on this type of pain. Increase of free radicals and oxidative stress are important in the induction of neuropathic pain. On the other hand, because there are some reports for the antioxidant properties of the red beet root extract, here is a hypothesis that red beet root extract can potentially reduce the Allodynia. Materials and Methods: This experimental study was performed using 42 male rats weighing 200-250 g. Neuropathic allodynia was created with the Sciatic Nerve chronic constriction injury Model (CCI). Animals were randomly divided into 6 groups (n+6)including positive control group, CCI surgical control group, intra-peritoneal treating of Red Beet root aqueous extract with 50, 100,150 mg/kg doses per day for 14 constitutive days after surgery and sham group received distilled water as a red beet vehicle at the same time period. The Von Frey test for mechanical allodynia and acetone test for thermal allodynia were performed on day zero (before surgery) and days 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28 post-surgery. Results: Intraperitoneal injection of Red Beet root aqueous extract with the doses of 50, 100 and 150 mg/kg resulted in a significant reduction in mechanical and thermal allodynia (p<0/05). The most effective dose for reducing both the mechanical and thermal allodynia was 150 mg/kg (p <0/01). Conclusion: The reports mentioned that Red Beet root extract can act as an antioxidant by reduction of free radicals and oxidative stress and can increase the amount of intracellular antioxidants. Therefore, it could be concluded that may be the mentioned effects of the extract are responsible for the observed effects of extract in the reduction of neuropathic allodynia in this study which needs more investigation.
