Abstract

The reinforcing effect of Laponite nanoparticles (NPs) on sage seed gum (SSG)-based hydrogels was studied using the texture profile analyzer (TPA) and dynamic mechanical rheometer. Stress sweep test results indicated that the storage modulus (G') was always higher than the loss modulus (G") for all nanoparticles concentration (CNPs) (0-25 wt%), and SSG hydrogels became stronger upon Laponite addition. Mechanical spectrum also revealed that NPs incorporation can improve the elasticity of nanocomposite hydrogels (NCH), based on the frequency sweep, complex viscosity (η*), complex modulus (G*) and loss tangent (tanδ) results. According to texture profile analysis results, the SSG biohydrogel with 5 wt% Laponite had maximum hardness (3.21 N) and apparent elastic modulus (172.6 g/s), and with increase in NPs proportion, there were a corresponding reduction (P<0.05) in these parameters. In conclusion, Laponite improved the rheological-textural properties of SSG based hydrogel and extended its potential as promising future bioproducts for industrial applications
