Abstract

Abstract. Look Back in Anger (1957), a post-war play by the English dramatist John Osborne, depicts the frustrations of Jimmy Porter in a society tangled with class distinctions. The only two female characters of the play, Alison, and her friend Helena, are being maltreated by Jimmy who from time to time attacks them verbally (and even physically); however, Alison and Helena do not behave the same, presenting differences in their behavior towards the male characters of the play. The present article endeavors to apply Simon de Beauvoir's feminist views on the female characters of the play, opening new horizons and presenting new views on Look Back in Anger. The results of the article show that, while Alison is a submissive and passive character, Helena is strong, acting as she wishes and according to her will.
