Abstract

This experiment was conducted to examine the relationship between mean just germination time (MJGT) and mean germination time (MGT) at different temperatures with field emergence (FE) of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) seeds. Germination tests were conducted on 14 seed lots, produced in different locations and years in Iran, at 13, 15, 17 and 20°C in the laboratory and sown in the field in March 2015. The overall means of MJGT and MGT of seed lots increased with decreasing temperature. MJGT and MGT of all seed lots were negatively correlated with FE in all temperatures though the relationship between MJGT and MGT with FE were closer at 20°C (P ≤ 0.01). A positive correlation between MJGT (P ≤ 0.05) with mean emergence time (MET) was found in all temperatures except 15°C while MGT was positively related with MET just at 20°C. The ageingrepair hypothesis is discussed as a possible explanation of differences in MJGT, MGT and FE of the seed lots.We suggest mean just germination time (MJGT) and mean germination time (MGT) at 20°C are both suitable indices to assess the vigour of alfalfa seed lots.
