Abstract

The purpose of the new warm mix asphalt (WMA) technology is to reduce the temperature required for mixing asphalt mixtures by using appropriate additive and modifier agent, and thus reducing the bitumen's viscosity, without a drop in the expected properties. In WMA mixtures, the mixing and compression temperatures are lower than that of hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures and are around 20 ° C to 55 ° C. In this research, Sasobit was used as an additive in hot mix asphalt. After evaluating the properties of aggregates, six series of laboratory specimens with sasobits replaced for bitumen in 0, 1.5 and 3 percentages were manufactured using two different gradings. The optimum asphalt percentage and other Marshall parameters were obtained using Marshall mixture design method. Then, after obtaining optimum asphalt percentage, specimens were manufactured utilizing a Superpave Gyratory Compactor machine for the indirect tensile strength test. Then, the indirect tensile strength of the specimens at 20 ° C temperature was calculated using the Universal Testing Machine (UTM). The results of this study showed that the tensile strength, marshall stability and optimum asphalt percentage of warm mix asphalt mixtures with different percentages of sasobit vary in different gradings, and increasing the sasobit percentage, causes the indirect tensile strength of the mixtures to increase.
