Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the production profile, incidence of periparturient diseases, culling rate and risk factor of them in the period of 60-days after parturition. Eight industrial dairy herds which were under supervision of a full time veterinarian located in north eastern of Iran were selected. In a prospective manner, 1464 dairy cows which were calved from June 22 to December 22, 2016 were observed for a period of 60 days after parturition. For each cow, monthly milk yield records, the exact date of disease occurrence and culling were recorded. Cox proportional hazards model and logistic regression were used to evaluate the factors influencing on culling and disease occurrence. Incidence of diseases for 60 days following period were as follow: Dystocia or calving assistance 46%, uterine inflammation 14%, retained placenta 9.9%, clinical mastitis 8.3%, lameness 3.6%, milk fever 2%, clinical ketosis 1/2%, replacement of abomasum 0.7%, fatty liver 0% and other diseases 9%. Average milk production was 40.19±4.44 and 39.49±3.99 kg in the first and second records, respectively. The rate of culling was 4.4%. Parity was positively correlated with chance of ketosis, milk fever and culling (P<0.05) Metritis increased chance of subsequent clinical ketosis (OR=6.02; p=0.002). Also, retained placenta increases the chance of Metritis (OR=8.8; P<0.001) and displacement of abomasum (OR=6.75; P=0.016). Milk yield and health status in industrial dairy herd located in this area of Iran are in acceptable condition. However, implementation of strategy to decrease reproductive disorders early after parturition will result in lower subsequent problems and less obligatory culling.
