Abstract

Introduction: Esophageal cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality all over the world. The main problem associated with esophageal cancer related death is its last diagnosis. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in several genes may increase risk of different cancers. Several genome-wide association studies in different populations have indicated regions on chromosome 8q24 harboring susceptibility SNPs for multiple cancers. These SNPs have been previously reported to have a significant association with several cancers such as prostate, colorectal, breast, bladder, ovarian, thyroid and lung cancers in various ethnic groups. Therefore, rs6983267 is suggested as a good multicancer susceptibility marker. Materials and methods In this case–control study, 30 patients with esophageal cancer and 45 control sampels were collected from different hospitals in Mashhad, Iran. Genomic DNA was extracted from 5 ml fresh blood. The rs6983267 SNP polymorphism was genotyped using Taqman method. Results: We considered P values below 0.05 so Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium was maintained in control group. These results were approved with chi square test. However the genotype frequencies were similar between control and case group. Discussion: In conclusion, our findings suggest that rs6983267 SNP has no association with esophageal cancer in Iranian population. However more research in larger populations are needed to confirm this.
