Abstract

Biogas is becoming popular as a renewable source of energy globally. Iran is also harvesting biogas from old landfills in large and metropolitan cities. The landfill biogas is currently used without treatment. However untreated biogas makes some impacts like corrosion and erosion of gas engines burning the biogas. Water scrubbing technique for the treatment of biogas was discussed and ASPEN simulation of a purification unit for Mashhad landfill biogas is reported. Based on 20 m3/h flow rate of biogas, 12m3/h water is needed for CO2 and H2S absorption and water is recycled in the process. The flowchart of the process and operating conditions are discussed.
