Abstract
Biofouling is considered as one of the most severe problems for the practical application of the RED process. Surface modification using a negatively charged polyanion layer on AEMs is a promising approach to improve the antibiofouling properties in RED. In this study, we investigated the antibiofouling improvement of anion exchange membrane -AEM- during RED by surface modification using polydopamine -PDA- coating. As a result, it was found that the antibiofouling properties of PDA-modified membrane was enhanced in compression with the unmodified membrane during the RED process. This improvement is attributed to the electric current and electric field generated in RED process in addition to the properties of PDA coating layer.
