Abstract

Poly-ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol- -EVOH- is a crystalline random copolymer with vinyl alcohol and ethylene segments, and has been widely used as food packaging material due to its excellent gas barrier properties and harmlessness to health. EVOH can crystallize over the whole composition range of ethylene and has good thermal stability and high chemical resistance1-. EVOH membranes have attracted plenty of research interest in fields of biomedical science and water treatment because of its good blood compatibility and hydrophilicity. As a semi-crystalline random copolymer with good wet strength and hydrophilicity, EVOH can be made into porous membranes by TIPS process or immersion-precipitation method2-. In this research, EVOH/blend system with water or mixed composition in the water bath was proposed. Fig. 1 shows results of effect as a function of quenching condition and take-up speed. The flux was increased with increasing amount of glycerol in water bath. For all membranes, asymmetric structures with the larger pores near the outer surface were obtained. This is due to the enhanced pore growth by the water penetration into the hollow fiber membrane because the good compatibility between glycerol and water. The water permeability could also be improved by increasing the water bath temperature, take up speed and glycerol content in the water bath.
