Abstract

Investigation of flow field and heat transfer from a rotating sphere is very important in fluid mechanics, astrophysics and astronautics. Besides, nowadays because of heat transfer characteristics of the porous medium and its lightness, they have extensive applications. In this study, for the first time, the flow phenomenon and forced convection because of rotation of a constant surface temperature sphere around itself in a porous medium is considered with the assumption that the flow is steady, laminar, and incompressible. The analytical solution method used is based on power series and the porosity factor is between zero and one. A spherical coordinate system is employed in which there is no variations of quantities in the - direction and the body forces and pressure gradient is ignored. As the Reynolds number increases, the velocity and vortex penetration increase in the boundary layer, and as a result, the thickness of the boundary layer increases. The porous medium causes the Nusselt number to increase.
