Abstract

In this study, carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized from citric acid through a hydrothermal process. The variation of hydrothermal conditions such as temperature and pH and their effects on the quantum yield was investigated. Characterization of samples were done using TEM, zeta potential, EDX, UV-vis and fluorescence spectrophotometer analyses. The results exhibited that synthesized CDs at alkaline condition (pH=11) and temperature around boiling point of citric acid (160 °C) had the size less than 5 nm based on TEM analysis with the highest quantum yield about 70%.
