Abstract
The larvae of some insects have ability to break down polysaccharide structures into trees and plants. In some of these larvae, this feature is due to bacteria in their digestive tract. In this study, several bacterial strains were extracted from the gastrointestinal tract of Osphranteria coerulescens larvae. One of these strains was Bacillus safensis CF99 which has ability to secrete the enzyme cellulase. The secreted cellulase was extracted and three substrates including avicel, cellulose and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) were adjacent in its vicinity. Results showed the best substrate that the enzyme can degrade is CMC. Then, the products of CMC degradation were analyzed by thin layer chromatography (TLC). Results showed after approximately 6 hours of vicinity of the enzyme with substrate, cellotetraose and cellohexaose as products, after 12 hours cellobiose as product and after 24 hours glucose as product produced.
