Abstract

In this study, the effects of a novel transparent nano-insulation in building windows are investigated on thermal comfort and energy consumption. In addition to the use of a novel nano-insulation in the building windows, a comprehensive dynamic model is also developed for evaluating the effect of using it in different climates of Iran. Five main parameters affecting the people’s thermal comfort (namely: indoor temperature, mean radiant temperature, predicted mean vote (PMV), predicted percentage of dissatisfied (PPD), and relative humidity) and also heating and cooling energy consumptions are evaluated. To make the results more applicable, a standard building is considered based on the ASHRAE 2004 standard and the modeling procedure is done for five different climates in Iran. Also, the results are presented for a case study building which is located in Mashhad city, Iran. The design of buildings and the analyses are done by combining simulation tools of the architecture and energy, including Rhinoceros 5 and Grasshopper software. Up to 2.23%, 7.61%, 5.45%, 5.68%, and 6.25% improvement of total energy consumption (cooling+heating) is achieved when nano-insulation is utilized in the windows of the standard building in cities of Bandar Abbas, Yazd, Mashhad, Rasht, and Tabriz, respectively. Also, up to 2.85%, 1.57%, and 3.64% improvement of total energy consumption (cooling+heating) is achieved when nano-insulation is used in the windows of the case study building in rooms A (west), B (south), and C (east), respectively.
