Abstract

Cinematic adaptation is a branch of comparative literature. Adaptation studies is an intertextual endeavor which goes beyond textual analysis. Benefitting from Gérard Genette’s definition of intertextuality, this paper scrutinizes literature as pre-text and cinematic adaptation as hyper-text. Focusing on Masoud Kimiai’s controversial movie, The Soil / Khak (1973), an adaptation of Mahmoud Dowlatabadi’s Baba Sobhan’s Tale/ Osneh Babasbehan (1968), we analyze different Genettian transformations including Transmotivation, Transvaluation, Transmodalization, Demotivation, and Intermodalization. It is concluded that most of Kimiai’s transformations in the course of adaptations are Transvaluations and Revaluation. This transformation reflects the director’s belief system rather than the writer’s views or his fictional world.
