Abstract

Since its appearance Orientalism has witnessed many developments internationally, regionally and domestically. As it comes to the Islamic world including Iran, in recent decades at least prudent view toward Orientalism has been grown up. There are some courses related to the oriental studies in several B.A, M.A and Ph.D. programs in Iranian academic curriculum. “Islamic Studies in the West”, “Islamic culture and civilization from orientalists’ view” (B.A and M.A in History and Civilization of Islamic Nations), “Orientalism and Orientalists” (Ph.D. in History and Civilization of Islamic Nations) and “Shiism in the Works of Orientalists” (M.A and Ph.D. in History of Shiism) are the most important courses in this regard. Each course has a syllabi including outlines and some sources which supposed to be used by all instructors in all universities. Present article investigates the approved syllabuses for these courses by Ministry of Higher Education in Iran to find out the applied approaches toward Orientalism in Iranian academic arena. Focusing on classical approach toward orientalism, emphasizing on the cohesion between colonialism and orientalism and ignoring recent approaches like neo-orientalism and post-orientalism are some of characteristics of the syllabi.
