Abstract

Load capacity and ductility are two key characteristics of the flat slab-column connection in high seismic areas. This study specifically examined the effect of strengthening layer thickness of Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) on punching shear strength and post punching behavior of flat slabs. The effect of the unbalanced moment, ECC thickness of the slab and the strengthening ECC layer on flat slab punching and post punching behavior were also investigated. Thirteen reinforced concrete flat slab specimens were made and examined. It was observed that the replacement of slab concrete with ECC increased the punching capacity and improved post-punching behavior without a large and sudden drop in load. In addition, the use of ECC as a strengthening layer for the flat slabs significantly increased the punching and post-punching shear strength capacities. The change in failure mechanism was observed from a sudden and abrupt failure to a ductile failure with high-energy absorption when more ECC layer thicknesses were used.
