Abstract

Abstract Identity is one of the most important issues in postcolonial literature. A House for Mr. Biswas (1961) by V. S. Naipaul and In the Castle of My Skin (1953) by George Lamming are both acknowledged as significant books in making the Caribbean identity visible. As two outstanding novelists of Caribbean literature, Naipaul and Lamming have been largely preoccupied with identity due to their awareness of the lack of cultural identity in this area as a result of colonialism. This is why they have presented an influential tool for a deeper exploration of postcolonialism. This study seeks to analyze A House for Mr. Biswas and In the Castle of My Skin in the light of Homi K. Bhabha’s theories. To achieve this goal, the main focus will be on the concepts of mimicry and hybridity which can be traced back to the dominion of the prevailing over the inferior groups. These two terms which are amongst Bhabha’s most imperative concepts signify the colonized societies’ suppression. In other words, the term “hybridity” is used to denote any kind of cultural fraternization, and the concept of “mimicry” happens when the residents of a colonized society, consciously or unconsciously, imitate their colonizers. Ultimately this research is going to find out how such postcolonial authors as Naipaul and Lamming have confirmed and unveiled their longing for independence, a free identity, and the restoration of their lives through their writings.
