Two members of the family Cimicidae, known as Bed bugs, pose a public health problem through infestation of human dwellings and biting residents. Bed bug infestations can adversely affect people\\\'s mental health and cause psychological distress. Over the past two decades, there has been an extensive spread of bed bug infestation worldwide. Knowledge and awareness of people about the behaviour and characteristics of bed bugs are important factors for the reduction of the prevalence of this infestation in an area. This study aimed to assess the knowledge of a group of Iranian people about bed bugs. A special questionnaire was prepared, including questions related to demographic information, identification and knowledge about bed bug control and prevention approaches. A total of questionnaires were distributed among students of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran, and the rest of the questioned people accessed the questionnaire via the website. Answered questionnaires were collected, and collected data was analyzed descriptively. Two hundred forty-seven people, including 120 (49%) men and 127 (51%) women, responded to the published questionnaires. The respondents were between 15 to 65 years old and in different levels of education (High school to doctorate). Seven per cent of people have stated that they have lived in a bed bugs-infested place, and 2% have been currently involved with infestation. 20% of people have considered bed bugs the second most important urban pest after German cockroaches. The percentage of those who thought that bed bugs can act as a vector for human pathogens was considerable (62%). A lack of knowledge about the distribution ways and control methods of bed bugs among respondents was observed.
