Cemented soils are widely found in nature and due to the presence of cementation agents, their behavior is different from uncemented granular soils. This study concerns the simulation of mechanical behavior of cemented sand by using the numerical discrete element method. The particle shape in cemented and uncemented sandy samples are assumed to be two-dimensional arbitrary convex polygons, which allows for having angular particles. For the simulation of the bonds between soil particles, a bond contact model considering tension and shear forces against failure is adopted. A qualitative comparison is performed with existing experimental works to demonstrate the capability of the simulations. The goals of this study are to investigate the effect of bond strength and particle shape on the mechanical behavior of cemented sand. A wide range of bond strength values are chosen and the samples are subjected to low and high confining pressure levels. Results show that by considering cementation among particles, shear parameters of the soil augment while a change in the bond strength does not affect the internal friction angle. By increasing the bond strength, the cemented samples indicate more brittle as well as dilative behavior with respect to uncemented samples. These findings are consistent with laboratory experiments in the literature. Furthermore, the results indicate that the effect of particle shape on the mechanical behavior of a cemented sample is the same as that of an uncemented sample. A sample with angular particles has greater compressive strength, internal friction angle, and stiffness. It is found that the bond strength has no effect on the gross yield point, which is defined as the start of plastic deformation.
