During spring of 2021, ribwort plantain plants (Plantago lanceolata) showing virus-like symptoms were observed in the urban area of Mashhad, Razavi Khorasan province, Iran. Symptoms on leaves consisted of mosaic and mottling. Leaves from eight diseased plants were sampled for total RNA extraction (50 mg tissue per sample) using an SV Total RNA Isolation Kit (Promega, USA) following the manufacturer’s instructions. Total RNA was used in RT-PCR for the detection of broad bean wilt virus 1 (BBWV1), cucumber mosaic virus, and tomato spotted wilt virus. Amplicons were obtained only for BBWV1 in 6 out of 8 samples tested but not from asymptomatic plants. RT-PCR using BBWVCPF/R specific primers (Ochoa-Corona et al. 2010) produced an amplicon of expected 967 bp size corresponding to conserved regions of large and small capsid protein genes. The sequence of the amplicon (one sample) was determined and submitted to GenBank as accession number PP845352. BLAST analysis showed approximately 81–84 and 92–96% sequence identities at the nucleotide and amino acid levels, respectively with various BBWV1 isolates for which sequence information is available in GenBank. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of BBWV1 in Plantago lanceolata in Iran.
