Authors: Ali Shiri ,
Abstract
Selenium-containing heterocycles, particularly selenophene and selenazole, have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their unique chemical, electronic, and optical properties, which make them valuable in a variety of fields such as materials science, organic electronics, and medicinal chemistry. Selenophene, an aromatic five-membered ring with selenium replacing sulfur, exhibits enhanced conductivity, stability, and a broadened absorption spectrum compared to its sulfur analog, thiophene. This makes it a promising candidate for organic semiconductors, photovoltaic cells, and light-emitting devices. Selenazole, a heterocyclic compound incorporating selenium into a five-membered ring with nitrogen, shows notable biological activity, including antimicrobial, anticancer, and antioxidant effects, which suggest its potential in pharmaceutical applications. The incorporation of selenium into these heterocycles imparts unique reactivity and stability, offering opportunities for developing new materials and therapeutic agents. As research progresses, understanding the fundamental properties of selenophene and selenazole could lead to the design of more efficient and functionalized compounds for diverse applications in electronics and medicine.
